About the Department

SRIKRISHNA COLLEGE, established in the year 1950, has been a centre of prominence, committed towards unfurling quality higher education and all round development.

Among eleven departments in Humanities, five departments in Science and the department of Commerce, Department of Philosophy is the traditional one. Logic, a branch of Philosophy was taught as one of the subjects of Intermediate course in the year 1952-53. In the year 1958-59 Philosophy was introduced in the graduate level as a general subject in Pass Course in our College and Honours in Philosophy has been introduced in the year 2011-12.

Under the affiliation to Kalyani University from the year 2000 now Philosophy is being taught in the Honours and Programme stream under the ‘CBCS Curriculum for Semesterized Undergraduate Course’ from 2018-19 sessions in parallel to the old 1+1+1 three year Degree course. In CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) curriculum 1.Core Course, 2.Elective Course, 3. Ability Enhancement Courses/ Skill Enhancement Courses are taught in six consecutive semesters of six months each.

In respect of Staff Pattern of the Department of Philosophy it is referred that the two Full Time permanent posts are sanctioned for B.A. Honours and Programme Course. From the year2020 two guest lecturers have been honoured as permanent State Aided College Teachers.

All Full-time Teachers perform the duties of Examiners (University & College), Paper-setters, Coordinators of University Examination regularly. SACTs also perform the duties of University and College Exams.

Senior Full-time Faculty member is the member of Undergraduate Board of Studies in Philosophy of Kalyani University from the year 2007 till date and was also the ex- member of Governing Body of the College. Co -faculty member was in charge of NSS Unit of the College under Kalyani University. Besides teaching all Full-time teachers perform the duties of various academic and other committees of the College regularly.

Teachers attend and participate in the UGC sponsored workshops, seminars, webinars, refresher course, short term course from time to time and publish articles in journals.

In Honours course student -teacher ratio is maintained. Student-Teacher relationship is also very good. In respect of Teaching and Learning method it can be mentioned that on the basis of Academic Calendar, Teacshing Plan, Model Questions, Honours and General courses are taught usually with the help of conventional teaching method viz. class room lecture with Chalk-duster-blackboard and also with the help of Audio – visual method. Group discussions, Debate, Personal interaction, Question and Answer method, Quiz, Class – test, Surprise Test, Internal Assessments according to University guideline, Home assignment, Remedial classes are adopted as teaching methods.

Orientation Programme, Wall Magazine, Fresher’s Welcome, Teachers’ Day, Class room departmental seminars and other programmes are arranged every year in the Department. Meritorious students take admission according to their merit panel and the SC & ST Students take admission in the Philosophy General Course.

We have an enriched librsary in our College where sufficient updated text books, reference books and some journals in Philosophy are available. Honours and General students are very much dependant on the library and they use reading room and lend books regularly. Students securing 55% marks in Philosophy Honours Study regular PG course and number of students study Distance Education PG course in various Universities. Needy General course students generally sit for competitive Eams. for services like SSC, IB, WB Police, RPF, Railways, Bank etc. and join.

We, all the teachers of the Department of Philosophy are very proud of our students as they are so simple ,good behaved, natural, hard worker and very loyal to teachers above all.
